Kosmoy vs Workato for AI Middleware: Which Layer Do You Need? (2026)
Workato and Kosmoy can both sit between AI and enterprise systems, but they start from opposite sides of the architecture: Workato from integration and automation, Kosmoy from AI control and governance.
Gartner's May 2026 AI middleware category makes Workato and Kosmoy look closer than their histories suggest. Workato is an enterprise integration and automation platform extending into agents and MCP. Kosmoy is a Kubernetes-native AI management platform extending its policy gateway, registries, observability and containment across models, MCP and A2A. Both can be middleware; they solve different halves of the problem.
The practical question is whether your bottleneck is connecting AI to business systems or controlling AI once it is connected. This comparison uses current vendor documentation, gives Workato credit where its iPaaS heritage is a real advantage, and shows where a dedicated AI control plane changes the risk model.
Who each product is for
Workato
Workato fits integration and automation teams that already manage the enterprise application fabric. Agent Studio and orchestration build on the same iPaaS foundation, while Enterprise MCP can expose recipes and skills to agents with user identity, access policy and audit trails.
Kosmoy
Kosmoy fits platform, security and governance teams accountable for heterogeneous AI across clouds and business units. It runs in the customer's Kubernetes and combines registries, LLM/MCP/A2A policy enforcement, observability, compliance evidence, evaluation and agent containment.
The capability radar
The radar exposes the architectural split rather than declaring a universal winner. Workato leads decisively on Agent Building and business integration (the latter is not even a radar axis); Kosmoy leads on Inventory, Containment, Compliance and Sovereignty. Workato is a broader automation platform; Kosmoy is a deeper AI control plane.

| Capability (0–10) | Workato | Kosmoy | Notes on Workato |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI Inventory & Discovery | 6 | 9 | Strong cataloguing inside the Workato-connected estate; less focused on independent discovery of AI assets outside it. |
| Security & Shadow AI | 7 | 8 | Verified User Access, RBAC-oriented policies and governed MCP access are meaningful enterprise controls. |
| Observability & FinOps | 7 | 7 | Central logging, audit trails and orchestration insights across Workato-managed interactions. |
| Gateway & Policy Control | 6 | 8 | Enterprise MCP and API management mediate tools and systems; not primarily a multi-provider LLM gateway product. |
| Guardrails & Runtime Safety | 5 | 8 | Governance and access policy are strong; dedicated prompt/response AI safety guardrails are not the platform's main differentiator. |
| Agent Containment | 3 | 9 | Permission and workflow controls rather than a kernel-enforced execution sandbox. |
| Compliance & Audit | 5 | 9 | Enterprise auditability and security controls; AI-regulation evidence generation is not positioned as the core system of record. |
| Testing, Evals & Red-teaming | 3 | 7 | Agent and workflow testing exists around development, but specialist LLM evaluation is not the main product category. |
| Agent Building | 9 | 6 | Agent Studio and orchestration are first-class capabilities. |
| Deployment Sovereignty | 3 | 10 | Regional cloud options and enterprise connectivity, but not Kosmoy's customer-Kubernetes-only architecture. |
Bold marks the highest score on each row. 10 is reserved for categorical architectural facts; specialists are expected to outscore platforms on their own spoke.
From category to architecture
Put one customer-owned control layer in the AI request path.
Kosmoy covers the control and operations side of AI middleware — LLM, MCP and A2A mediation, identity, guardrails, cost, observability, evidence and containment — in your own Kubernetes, alongside the iPaaS you already run.
Where Workato wins
Enterprise integration. Workato's iPaaS, API management, data orchestration and workflow automation address the N×M problem between agents and business systems directly. Kosmoy deliberately does not maintain thousands of SaaS connectors or replace an iPaaS.
Agent development and orchestration. Agent Studio and orchestration are first-class product areas. Kosmoy can build governed agents but is not trying to become a low-code enterprise automation suite.
Turning existing automation into agent tools. Workato Enterprise MCP can expose existing Recipe Functions and Skills as MCP servers, preserving authenticated user context and audit — a strong path for enterprises with years of Workato automation already deployed.
Where Kosmoy wins
Deployment sovereignty. Kosmoy is single-tenant software in the customer's Kubernetes, including air-gapped environments. Its control plane does not need to live in a vendor SaaS. That is a categorical difference for central banks, defence and similarly constrained environments.
AI-wide inventory and risk. Kosmoy maintains systems, model, MCP and agent registries with ownership and risk classification across multiple external platforms, rather than limiting visibility to the integration estate flowing through one automation product.
Runtime AI safety and containment. The AI Gateway enforces LLM/MCP/A2A policy and guardrails; Action Capsules add a kernel-enforced sandbox, constrained egress and kill switch. Workato's access policy is strong, but it does not document an equivalent execution-containment boundary.
Regulatory evidence. Kosmoy maps inventory state plus runtime logs into EU AI Act, ISO 42001-aligned and NIST AI RMF evidence workflows; Workato's public AI middleware material emphasises governance and audit but not the same AI-regulation system of record.
Deployment and pricing model
| Workato | Kosmoy | |
|---|---|---|
| Primary heritage | iPaaS, workflow automation, API/data integration | AI management, governance and runtime control |
| Best integration surface | Enterprise applications, workflows, APIs and data | Models, agents, MCP servers and AI systems |
| Agent development | Deep — Agent Studio and orchestration | Governed builder; dedicated builders go deeper |
| AI runtime gateway | MCP/API governance; broader LLM gateway is not the sole centre of gravity | OpenAI-compatible LLM + MCP + A2A policy gateway |
| Customer Kubernetes-only control plane | No | Yes |
| Kernel-level agent sandbox | Not documented | Action Capsule |
| AI regulatory evidence | Audit/governance controls | EU AI Act, ISO 42001-aligned, NIST AI RMF workflows |

Running them together
A credible enterprise architecture can use both. Workato remains the integration/orchestration layer that gives agents safe business actions; Kosmoy remains the independent AI control layer that inventories those agents, governs their model/tool traffic and produces evidence. This avoids forcing an iPaaS to become a complete AI governance system or forcing an AI control plane to recreate the enterprise integration estate.
Questions buyers ask
Is Workato an AI middleware platform?
Yes in the broad architectural sense. Workato explicitly positions its integration, orchestration, Agent Studio and Enterprise MCP capabilities against the emerging AI middleware category. It is particularly strong on connecting AI to enterprise applications and workflows.
Is Kosmoy a Workato replacement?
Usually no. Kosmoy does not replace Workato's iPaaS connectors, recipes or business-process automation. It can replace or complement the AI control/governance layer around models, agents and tools where sovereignty, runtime policy and AI evidence matter.
Which is better for regulated Kubernetes environments?
Kosmoy. It is designed to run single-tenant in the customer's Kubernetes, including air-gapped deployments, and adds AI-specific evidence and runtime containment. Workato is stronger when business integration and workflow automation are the dominant requirements.
